Overview

WE MUST AGREE UPON A UNIFIED AND COMMONLY RECOGNIZED BUDDHAPUNIMA

Every teaching has its own teacher and our teacher is the unacquainted good friend of all sentient beings; the embodiment of wisdom and compassion; the saviour of the sentient beings; who taught the truth of all phenomenal things, and spoke to the men and women that they are the ultimate controller of their own destinies.
Moreover, it was said in His teachings that every human being has the necessary seeds of enlightenment; to become a Buddha. What our Noble Teacher said has never remained an empty talk or a mere guess. The all conquering excellent Buddha himself has practically taken the perfection path of the four noble truths, and the practice of generosity etc. to remove those faulty concepts one after another by practicing heedfulness and mindfulness; by internalizing the virtuous thoughts of supreme altruism and compassion; by practicing the path and experiencing the asceticism. In that way, He has become the rightful example of the Buddha, the Noble Being of all time, who is stainless, faultless and full of excellent qualities.
The birthday of such a great Being, who has contributed greatly to generate germs of love and peace in the world and among the sentient beings, (especially those of human beings on this earth), should be celebrated by the people of world together at a same date. Therefore, it is really needless to say that, all Buddhist dharma friends should spontaneously come to an agreement to unify a single date for Buddhapunima, Buddha's birthday.
Have we, the Buddhist dharma friends all over the world, once come together to celebrate a unified birthday of our Lord Buddha? This has never happened once! This is something that we as Buddhist dharma friends should be ashamed of. Even for a middle class family, the sons and daughters will celebrate the birthday of their loving father and this father would have the privilege of his birthday being celebrated together by his children. But for our Noble Teacher, Whose teachings reflect the highest truth; "you are controller of your own destiny", "everyone has the potential of becoming enlightened", Who has shown to us the ultimate truth of words and true path; Who has also shown to us the great gate of liberation, there was never a time that we all joined together as one family to celebrate His birthday.

If all the dharma friends leading by example celebrating one commonly recognised birthday of the Buddha worldwide, then the people of the world will follow in suit. This will also be an opportunity for the people of the world to repay for what He has done for them. What a lovely thing that would be! What a desirable thing that would be!

We are indisputably followers of His teachings and we are supposed to be one family. Lord Buddha is our loving father and under His guidance we grow as His faithful children. But where is the unity among us? We haven't even been able to celebrate His birthday together!  Some might think we should keep our own different traditions and it's not a problem that we do not have a commonly recognised Buddhapunima. This kind of attitude is definitely wrong. What represent by such attitude is a clear sign of the fact that, we are dogmatically preferring our regional traditions over everything else; and not even being able to agree upon a commonly recognised Buddhapunima. It also reflects the fact that we are not being aware of the international and universal needs.
Why haven’t we, the dharma friends around the world, come together to celebrate a commonly recognized birthday of the Buddha, our Kindest and Noble Teacher? If all the dharma friends leading by example celebrating one commonly recognized birthday of the Buddha worldwide, then the people of the world will follow in suit. This will also be an opportunity for the people of the world to repay for what He has done for them. What a lovely thing that would be! What a desirable thing that would be!
If we, dharma friends, worldwide recognised a common Buddhapunima, the world will follow to celebrate with us. This common celebration will also intensify the thoughts of brotherhood among all kinds of Buddhist communities around the world and shows the world that we are truly brothers and sisters under the same blessings of our Noble Teacher. This will also solidify the foundation of the belief that we, dharma communities, should always be together in good times and bad times, and bounded by the wishful blessings as good friends.
